About the Speaker
Mary grew up in northeast Iowa on a farm near Riceville. She graduated from Iowa State with a degree in architecture. After several years working in traditional architectural offices in Iowa City and Denver, Colorado, she moved to Rockville to work for Marriott International. In 1999 Mary took a position at the US State Department overseeing the design of new and renovation projects at embassies in Africa and East Asia.
When Congress appropriated funds to construct a new embassy compound in Iraq, Mary was asked to oversee the design and construction. She spent the next two years in Baghdad managing the contractor as 26 buildings were constructed. The project was completed on time and on budget.
In 2009 Mary moved to the United Arab Emirates to work for a UAE company managing the design of buildings to support the government’s campaign to promote the tourist industry. In 2015 she retired to Waverly where she is active on the Planning and Zoning Commission, community meals and the Eisenach Village residents’ council.
